Registering in Norway as a European citizen
Beyond three months of stay, registration is an obligation, with a deadline. It looks simple; it is the basis of residence and the documents that make the difference.
- D-number
- SUA appointment
- BankID

The real issue — the basis of residence
Registration rests on a basis, declared from the online form onwards: employee, own funds, family… This choice governs everything else — the documents requested, what the police will check, and what you will then declare to the tax office.
A signed employment contract is not always enough: a job judged too marginal may not found the residence. And the basis declared to the UDI must match the one you will give to the Skatteetaten. An inconsistency between the two is a refusal written into your file.
The questions you are going to ask yourself
- Which basis should I declare in my situation — and what happens if I get it wrong?
- Which exact documents for that basis? The list is only handed out at the end of the online form.
- Which documents need translating, by whom, and in what form?
- What if the first available appointment falls after the three-month deadline?
- How do I prove a real job when I have only just started it?
Does registration cost anything?
No, it is free.
Does it have to be renewed?
No. It is done once, whatever the length of the stay afterwards.
Do I need a BankID for the pre-registration?
No. The account on the UDI portal is created with an e-mail address.
